Project Description

Journalism & Communication

Strengthening independent media in Yemen has always been an important topic for the Yemen Polling Center (YPC). YPC has trained journalists, assisted the establishment of associations, created media platforms and supports independent journalists. YPC also regularly collects data on media consumption in Yemen. Currently, Yemeni media is in the worst state it has ever been. The Houthis cracked down on media in areas under their control; with most media outlets shut down. All across the country journalists are at risk of kidnapping, arrest, and murder.  Many well-known journalists and intellectuals who are well respected within society have stopped publishing in Yemen, as most media outlets are politicized.

The opportunity of the young generation to develop and showcase their talents; receive national and international recognition and express themselves in independent spaces diminished with the beginning of the war in 2015. Beneath the elite bargaining and violent conflict, young activists, photographers, filmmakers, artists, entrepreneurs, and writers continue to challenge authorities in their everyday lives by claiming, expanding and defending spaces in which they can express themselves. Finding ways around the repression of the Houthi rule in northern Yemen, and despite the conflict in Aden and other cities, these young people, continue to express themselves and continue to build bridges within Yemeni society. With the generous assistance of the German Institute of Foreign Affairs, al-Madaniya provides a pace for these young people to express themselves.

One of YPC's first projects was focused on strengthening independent media and was funded by the National Endowment for Democracy in 2006. Since then, YPC has continuously worked on strengthening journalists in its various projects, funded by the Middle East Partnership Initiative and the European Union. Since 2014, YPC frequently collaborates with the Konrad-Adenauer Stiftung's Gulf Programme on media-related projects. Together with the German NGO MICT and the Yemeni telecommunication company YemenSat, YPC implemented a project funded by German Institute for Foreign Affairs (IFA) in 2015. Al-Madaniya magazine was first established in June 2017. The project is implemented with the financial assistance of the IFA and has received support from the Konrad-Adenauer Stiftung.
